Miss Brooklyn 2008 crowns her successor
The coronation is nearly upon us. Scores of well-coiffed New York gals had their chance, the deadline was extended, and now only 11 remain, waiting eagerly on the door-step of borough royalty. All this dramatic to-do here is for the third annual Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Pageant, happening this Sunday, Mar. 28. The day includes all you’d expect from any such affair: the contestants on-stage, showing off their talent, intellect, fashion and class; and then an evening after-party to meet and greet the new queen. Which one of these will it be? Tickets are still available to come and see at Brooklyn College’s Sam Levenson Theater. The 2 p.m. pageant is $25, but $15 will get you into the catered coronation party at 5. The competition is the first step on the Miss America circuit, so see how the whole thing begins. More details here.
Great news, parade-wave practitioners: the deadline to enter the 2010 Miss Brooklyn contest has been extended due to a surge in entries from Brokelyn readers after our item last week. Yep, the pageant is now allowing entries through March 7. So if you’re seriously thinking about pursuing this path to scholarship money (probs $1000) and free stuff galore (see “sponsors”), here’s advice from reigning Miss Brooklyn Keelie Sheridan, a 23-year-old Manhattan Beach student who’s been living in Brooklyn for the past five years. Turns out Keelie’s one of us: she buys her clothing at the Salvation Army in Sheepshead Bay. Read the rest of this entry »

Leigh-Taylor Smith, Miss Brooklyn 2008, made it all the way to Miss America 3rd Runner-up
Do you have a passion for community service, look good in a swimsuit and high heels, but aren’t quite ready to be questioned by the likes of Rush Limbaugh? Did you know there was a Miss Brooklyn pageant? Neither did we. But luckily we stumbled upon the site today because there are only three days left to apply to become 2010′s titleholder, who will be crowned on March 28 at Brooklyn College. The contest is open to women, age 18-24 (there’s a teen version too) who live, work or study in the five boroughs. Competitors vie for an academic scholarship—this year’s amount hasn’t been announced, but it’s been $1,000 for the last two years—and near-reaching fame. Read the rest of this entry »

Hagan (left) and Miss Brooklyn Outstanding Teen, Joelle Bracco
Miss Brooklyn 2010 or Miss Recent New York City Transplant? On Sunday, this year’s Miss Brooklyn crown went to Mallory Hagan, a 21-year-old gal living in Bed-Stuy who dazzled, tap-danced and took the pageant title like a pro, which, it seems she is. In Alabama. Before Sunday, Hagan was known most recently as Miss Chattahoochee Valley 2008 (Alabama). Before that, as Miss Smiths Station Outstanding Teen 2006 (also Alabama). Clearly, Hagan knows how to win pageants, and she’s got talent, for sure. So that covers the “Miss,” but Brooklyn? The competition doesn’t even require its contestants to live here.
