Marty till the break of dawn!

swearing inYou can’t tell this from looking at the picture, but hidden in the glare of the spotlight is Borough President Marky Markowitz being sworn in by Mayor Mike at the Park Slope Armory last night. The photo is so awful because we were actually on stage behind them at this fancy shmancy politico-love-fest! Read the rest of this entry »

Celebrities in Brooklyn, part 2: the return of SiLex!

First Martha Stewart at the Brooklyn Flea, now our borough’s most socially ambitious reality-TV couple—you’d think we were, like, perezhilton or something. Or maybe Brooklyn just is that fabulous these days. That’s clearly the opinion of Alex McCord and Simon Van Kempen of “The Real Housewives of New York City,” who, despite their portrayal on the show as Manhattan-society wannabes, were reppin’ BK harder than a Jay-Z/Memphis Bleek collabo when we spoke to them at Friday’s “Take Your Man to The Doctor” event at Borough Hall.

They even hinted that the borough may play a starring role in “Housewives” season three, which premieres early next year. “We never know what’s going to make the final cut on the episodes,” Alex told us, “but we’ve done lots of great filming in Brooklyn.” Read the rest of this entry »

We’re taking the Love Train to these free R&B shows

The O'Jays, back in the day.

The O'Jays, back in the day.

How could these Monday night shows not be a blast? Tonight, Keyshia Cole and Lyfe Jennings kick off the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series at Wingate Field in Flatbush.

The rest of the lineup tilts heavily old-school, with artists including Teena Marie, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Baker and the O’Jays next Monday. (You know they sang Love Train, didn’t you?) Read the rest of this entry »

Are you among the powerless?

Probably the only power list I’ll ever qualify for (No. 7), and the odds are good you fall under one of these categories, maybe No. 47 (retail-clothing workers). For the sake of a lot of our friends’ jobs, we hope No. 23 (Tina Brown) isn’t true, while No. 51 (Coney Island toilet guards) and No. 90 (Ruby’s) makes us miss summer. No. 64 takes a hit at poor ole Marty, while No. 28 ISN’T EVEN A REAL PERSON. But those guys at No. 1 don’t get a fair shake, especially since, remember, Phish returned to play several shows in New York this year. Via Village Voice.
