PS Armory winter special: no $85 signup fee

No frostbite here

If you were holding out hope for an Indian summer to squeeze in those last few outdoor jogs, that hope probably just got swept away in a gust of Canadian air. Well, lucky for your Endorphin-high, the YMCA at the Park Slope Armory (along with the Prospect Park Y) is offering a little help to keep you fit, and your wallet fat. The local YMCAs are waiving their joiner’s fee between Dec. 26 and Jan. 31 for their Winter Membership Special. The deal saves you the Armory’s $85 one-time fee ($75 for students), the $121 for a combo membership (Armory plus Prospect Park) or the $121 for Prospect Park alone. There’s still monthly membership, but it’s these initial costs that really hurt—Armory memberships run just $40 per month for adults, $32 for students and $72 for families. More info on the YMCAs here and here.

Yay! Park Slope Armory YMCA opening today

The running track at the Armory Y.

Any time you hear of a new YMCA opening in Brooklyn is a good day—how many Bally’s offer financial aid?—and we’re feeling downright exuberant  about the ribbon-cutting today at the new $16 million Y opening in the Park Slope Armory, at 15th Street and Eighth Avenue. So far all we’ve seen of this rehabbed 1895 fortress is the 1/8th-mile running track (click photo for a bigger version), but good lord is it a looker. The 20,000 square-foot space also boasts 50 pieces of cardio equipment, four multipurpose courts for basketball, soccer and volleyball. The class schedule isn’t out yet, but it will offer spinning, pilates and aerobics along with various family classes. Today’s the opening ceremony, and the complex opens for real on Jan. 30. Starting tomorrow (Jan. 12) they’re selling charter memberships—$40/month for individuals and $72/month for families. There’s some kind of dual-membership deal where you can join this place and the Prospect Park Y on 9th Street, but they don’t give the rates on the web site. For those who don’t live nearby, the Y is offering free day passes through the end of the month to its six other locations in Brooklyn—click the box on this page. YMCA, Park Slope Armory, 361 15th St., (212) 912-2580 tsylvester@ymcanyc.org.

Guide to January yoga deals in Brooklyn

downwarddogYou’ve resolved to get in better shape in mind and body. You’ve also resolved to spend less money. You have not resolved to start running outside when it’s 10 degrees. (Maybe next year.) For yoga aficionados, January is the season of deals—and have we got one for you! Actually, you’ll have to wait until next week to find out about Brokelyn’s exclusive offer of unreasonably inexpensive yoga, dance and family fitness classes at a studio we LOVE. In the mean time, here’s a sampler of what’s in various other neighborhoods around town, and a tip: take the money you save and buy a mat now. Rental is always about $1, which quickly adds up to the price of just buying your own, and you’ll never have to wonder what else is sharing the mat with you.  Read the rest of this entry »

Calling all NYC yogis, swamis and didge dudes: there’s a new blog just for you

The Didge Project, featured here.

Whenever we find out about a promising new blog that has to do with Brooklyn, affordable anything, or a combination of those two, we feel the need to pass along the info. So here’s Well+Goodnyc, a new site dedicated to helping New Yorkers find accessible ways to feel, as the name suggests, well and good. Though the blog covers all of NYC, it has some fun Brooklyn-related items already. Currently, their top story is a feature on the adorable lads behind The Didge Project, a healing-through-didgeridoos org that we’ve been meaning to do something on. (Can someone PLEASE bring didge yoga to Brooklyn?) Read the rest of this entry »

Sweat it outdoors with epic summer fitness guide

Gyms, they try so hard to get you in the door, what with their discounts and freebies and entreaties to karma. But what about for the rest of us who just plain don’t like the gym, those who think that running and working out means making your way through the elements, not plodding on an infinity wheel in air conditioning while watching your membership dollars used to broadcast Nate Berkus‘s bland face? The city is a bastion of free fitness opportunities, and Well+Good’s new inaugural free Summer Wellness Guide lays it all out for you: 20-pages of yoga, outdoor fitness classes, bootcamps, canoeing, many of which don’t cost a thing! Plus: skin care tips and healthy restaurants with outdoor dining and there’s even a mashup-heavy running playlist to get you started! Read the rest of this entry »
