Fucked in Park Slope

No office holiday party? No problem!

Mistletoe mischief ahoy! Poster by Meghan Doherty.

If you’re a freelancer/work-from-home type, you get to miss out on all the annoyances of the office: the commute, the horribly claustrophobic cubicle walls, the need for “personal hygiene,” etc. But you also miss the good things: namely, a chance to get wasted with your coworkers and blame it all on “holiday cheer.” Well, Brooklyn blogs to the rescue! We’re teaming with our friends at the skint, Brooklyn Based and Fucked in Park Slope to bring you the No Office Holiday Party on Dec. 15 at Littlefield. We’ve got cheap holiday punch, a hot Santa photo booth, live-band karaoke and the always hilarious Kurt Braunohler. And you can make out with whomever you like under the mistletoe; we promise the boss isn’t watching. Full details below. Read the rest of this entry »

Take a break from all your worries: The best post-lay-off bar?

Where everybody knows your Twitter handle

Where do you go to tie one on after you’ve been laid off? Our friends over at FiPS have a good debate going on today — although one we hope you won’t have a need for anytime soon! — on this very topic. It’s a specific alchemy of elements you need: a place that’s comforting and friendly (Norm!) but not too rowdy that you can’t still drown your sorrows, with beers cheap enough to afford with your non-existent paycheck (free bar food helps too). Kerri at FiPS says her pick is High Dive, for its free popcorn, Boss-filled jukebox, chalkboard walls on which to scribble your unemployment rage and, most importantly, a drink board where friends can pre-pay for your drinks. What’s your pick? Team Brokelyn weighs in with some of ours below, several of which are sadly drawn from real experience. Read the rest of this entry »

An excuse to get your midweek September drink on

photo via Tea Lounge's Facebook page

And by “drink” we mean both “tea” and “booze.” Though summer is the undisputed champion of free events, don’t let this the gray turn of September force you to open your wallet and shell out entertainment dollars. Kerri Doherty (of Fucked in Park Slope) is back with another month of free events as part of the weekly series at the Slope’s cavernous Tea Lounge. September’s offerings start tonight and include a skillshare, a pet peeve forum and a story slam. Full schedule below! Read the rest of this entry »

Please help pick our SXSW panel, peeps!

sxsw logoIn late August, our minds naturally turn to end-of-summer beach bonfires, brainy fall pursuits and the South by Southwest interactive conference only seven short months away. OK, it may seem a little early for most of us to start thinking about Geekstock, but not for the organizer elves, who are faced with selecting dozens of panels from hundreds of applications. And what do you know, there’s one about Brooklyn in the pile! Erica from Fucked in Park Slope has put together a pitch on How the Internet Made BK Famous, featuring speakers from the likes of Brownstoner, Brooklyn Based, and some blog about living big on small change in Brooklyn. The competition at SXSW is fierce — and we need your vote if we wanna bloviate, Brooklyn-style. Please pick our panel, and we’ll buy you a beer in Austin. (Long as they have Brooklyn Brewery.)

Make your Tuesdays in August less boring

See you next Tuesday at the Tea Lounge!

Problem: Tuesday nights are boring and you’re poor. Solution: the Tea Lounge in Park Slope’s FREE Tuesday night events. Curated by Kerri Doherty of Fucked in Park Slope, the series features everything from beer making story telling. Here’s what in store: Read the rest of this entry »

BK bloggers unite May 17 for a good cause!

Brokelyn's Lauren Cannon gets some blogger love at last year's meetup. Photo by Jill Harrison.

If you live in Brooklyn and read this site, odds are you have a blog, have dreams of starting one or, at the very least, have a regular rotation of your favorite blogoville residents you check each day to stay informed (or maybe just stay procrastinated). As cut-throat as New York City is, Brooklyn bloggers are an intensely supportive and friendly bunch; now we’re coming again together for one of our favorite causes — drinking, mingling, seeing your face — and an actual cause: helping a Bay Ridge family facing a double-dose of aggressive cancer. Join us as we form a superfecta with our friends (and kick-ass blogs) Fucked in Park Slope, the skint and Brooklyn Based May 17 for the 2011 Brooklyn Blogger Meetup at the Bell House! Bed Bugs at the Pavilion, one day only!

Photo via FiPS

Ok, so we were pretty sure that we were all bedbugged-out on these pages… until we saw this incredible photo of the Pavilion marquee this morning on FiPS. We’ll let you read the story there, but we had to get in this shot, lest you miss the daring feat of letter-arrangement. And once your initial reaction wears off, you might want to note how well the prank title blends in with all the real stuff up there. If only they were in 3D! Read what happened here at FiPS, including the astute comparison to one character of JetBlue fame.

BK Hookup ticket giveaway! Give us your best pick-up line

Just say no to Santa, Nancy! You can do better

You probably know the drill by now with the well-established recurring BK Hookup parties at the Bell House, but here’s a quick study guide just in case: It’s a cheap night at a great bar with good music and lasciviously discounted drinks. And the best part: EVERYONE IS THERE FOR THE SAME REASON (hooking up). So, you know, the odds are on your side. Several people we know have done quite well at past events, to the point of making out on the dance floor, though none as well as this awwdorable couple who met at last year’s Naughty Office Holiday Party, fell in lurve and got married. FiPS and Eaters Digest NYC are back again this year with another night of holiday-fueled singles mixing Wednesday night, and Brokelyn has some tickets to give away. Here’s how to win: Read the rest of this entry »

Cheapest dry-cleaners in Park Slope? Anyone?

drycleaning2When a reader asks for tips on the cheapest way to do this or that around town, we like to open it up to everyone. There are always a few of you with some great ideas on throwing that cheap dance party, and all the neighborly helpfulness makes everyone feel good. Well, today, we came across a request for cheap services we couldn’t resist, and it wasn’t even directed here. FiPS sent out a call from a reader looking for the cheapest dry-cleaners in Park Slope: “I’m broke, but I don’t want to be dirty! Any ideas?” The dirty brokester’s call has gone unanswered so far, so we put it to you to help her out: Any suggestions for cheap dry-cleaners in the Slope? Comment away.

Scenes from the No Office Holiday Party

Santa knows you've been naughty. And he likes it.

Thursday’s No Office Holiday Party had so many highlights: those high-quality photos from Shootbooth and their 100-year old camera; Kurt Braunohler turning your workplace horror stories into comedy gold or the jams of DJ Colleen Crumbcake that kept everyone dancing way past curfew. For us, the highlight might have been the 10-person Team Brokelyn live-band karaoke rendition of Blister in the Sun, which might have shook the stage (and scared the band) a little. You can relive the freelance-fueled fun via these pictures from our friends at The Brooklyn Chemistry, who documented all the singing, dancing, sexy Santa (and Santa-ess) loving evening. A few of our favorites below! Read the rest of this entry »
