Bargains galore in Little Pakistan

shoes2The storefronts don’t exactly scream “style destination,” but Blessed be Allah: there is some fine shopping along the stretch of Coney Island Avenue between Foster and Avenue H that we’ll affectionately call Little Pakistan. (By the way, is it kosher for infidels to mention Allah—in a nice way?) When Brokelyn style scout Eliza Gran went on a recent jaunt, phrases like “exactly like John Robshaw” (about block-print fabrics for $4 a yard) and “Omigod, just like Calypso!” (cotton sequinned pajamas, $30) were all over her lips and money was flying out of her wallet (in singles). Addictive home finds at Amazing Savings

elizas-hat-5One of the satisfactions of living in rural Brooklyn (Midwood, Ditmas, etc.) is the proximity of Amazing Savings, the bastard child of a 99-cent store and a Bed Bath & Beyond. This is where Orthodox Brooklyn shops for foil trays, plasticware (oh, the humanity!) and weird household items like washing machine bra-savers. But there’s tons more good stuff. Every so often we stumble across one of those shops or eateries that makes us go all broka-quiver, in the words of a great man we know. The merch is so delicious, and the prices so unreasonably low, that our hearts race, our hands tremble and we roam around in a daze mumbling “omigod…” This is that place.
