To bowl or not to bowl… is that ever the question? Well, it should be, and the answer is “bowl, especially on weekday evenings in November.” For the entire month, Brooklyn Bowl is offering “A Very Happy Hour” of free bowling, and free shoes, Monday through Thursday evenings, 6 to 7 p.m. No catch, except a four-person minimum. And… if you happen to take up the offer this week, stay a bit later and watch the remaining World Series game(s) for a chance to win the “Strikes & Pitchers 2 Good 2 Be True” giveaway. Each game night, enter to win a free party with two lanes, for two hours, with two pitchers of beer and two French Bread pizzas.

Move over, First Saturdays—Third Wednesdays are here. This Wednesday, October 21, from 6:30 to 9, Prospect Park’s Picnic House will be the locale for the Lullwater Lounge Third Wednesday: a monthly pop-up happy hour where you can spend an evening looking out on the long meadow, drink in hand. Or shall we say drinks: tickets ($20 in advance/$25 at the door) are good for an entire night’s worth of open bar (sponsors include Brooklyn Brewery and The Famous Grouse whiskey) and snacks from Mambo. But we’ve wangled a free pair for one randomly-selected Brokelyn reader who joins our very own email list between now and Monday midnight. So sign up for our weekly blast of brokester scoops, and you may be toasting your good fortune at the Lullwater Lounge.

Lee Avent, the author of this post, is the kind of Brokelyn reader we love: when she noted a dearth of coverage of her own neighborhood, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, she didn’t merely complain—she gamely volunteered to fill the gap. We now know where to find a $4 margarita, 24-hour jerk chicken, a fast and good tailor (here are some in other neighborhoods too). BTW, we also discovered a handy PLG blog called Hawthorne Street. Hit it, Lee… Read the rest of this entry »

With $3 drafts and afternoon-long happy hours, Prospect Heights is a small sliver of Brooklyn where the drinks alone should be a cheapskate draw. But with some mouth-watering daytime fare, sale racks that overfloweth and well-stocked knick-knackeries, the neighborhood isn’t a find only for the pocket-change imbiber. Desperate, hungry shoppers, read on too. Here are my Prospect Heights picks from beer glass to last-minute stocking-stuffer. Read the rest of this entry »
