Brokelyn on Tumblr: It's a Tumblast!

Hello internet users! Because we know our Brokelyn Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter accounts weren’t enough, Brokelyn is now on Tumblr! Why should you follow us there? We’ve put together a list of five reasons.

1. Musings. Our Tumblr is team Brokelyn’s hyperactive sensory appendage on the cerebral cortex of our main blog. That means quotes, photos, reblogs and more things you won’t find on Brokelyn proper. 

2. Filters. Our tumblr provides links to our top stories, so if you’re more of the skimming type, follow us to be exposed to only the biggest items of brokevestigative journalism. But stay up with our regular site for everything else!

3. Fashion. We will regularly post our thrift finds, crazy sales discovered on the spot, cross-bridge sample sales, street style and other breaking gems that don’t merit a full article. Also, every Wednesday, anticipate gratuitous picture of a Brokelynite – spearheaded by two of the most stylish ladies on team brokelyn and inspired by the forever-meme GPOYW (look it up).

4. Voyeurism. Our Tumblr features behind-the-scenes Brokelyn: more of a lens into who our contributors are and how we live. Here we’ll boast about our day-to-day, satiating our deepest urges to share (like we do on Twitter. But with more pictures).

5. Tell us your cheapest, darkest secrets. Our tumblr has an anonymous ask box. Don’t have the time to write an email or require more than 140 characters in a mere tweet? Ask us on Tumblr! Whatever your heart desires.

How many times do I have to tell you: Milkbones are NOT vegan!

It seems all you need to get a book deal these days is a catchy blog theme, cute pictures and a few digs at hipsters. But for those of us who use Hipster Puppies Tumblr to break up the monotony of hipster humans strolling down Bedford, DUMBO’s powerHouse Arena is hosting the finest — and furriest — Brooklyn alternative to Fashion’s Night Out to celebrate the latest blog-to-book deal. Dress Spot (or is it Iggy Pup?) in that Organic Baby Rib Dog T from American Apparel and make your way to  the Hipster Puppies Pageant on Aug. 25. The store will be packed with mini poodles on mini leopard-print leashes reading mini Bukowski in mini leggings, the free PBR will be flowing, and the best-dressed pooch will win prizes. 

Blog founder and music critic Christopher R. Weingarten will be signing copies of the Hipster Puppies paperback. Need some ideas? Give Daisy a slick crew cut and a Venus symbol tattoo to make feminist puppy — you could even try adding a dog collar. Another great option is an oversized (or regular person-sized) blazer, a candy cigarette and Brown University pendant for pseudo-intellectual puppy. What better way to say farewell to summer by sticking it to the mainstream, doggy-style?

She wants Nobu but your budget says Popeye’s. The simple solution: Popeye’s sushi.

That’s just what’s pictured in this photo from fancyfastfood.com, a brilliant new Tumblr blog—and today’s Twitter sensation—that deconstructs fast food items and recreates them as artfully styled gourmet-looking meals.

This maki roll and sashimi plate was actually made from Popeye’s items: a two-piece Bonafide spicy fried chicken dinner, a Loaded Chicken Wrap, a large order of red beans and rice, and Popeye’s Lousiana Hot Sauce. “The blog started out as a goof, but then I got really into it,” the author tells Brokelyn. “Now each dish takes about two to three hours to think out and prepare.” See the before picture, and the mad genius behind the blog, after the jump.

Each post on fancyfastfood.com details exactly how to shred chicken strips (for sushi), pulse French fries in a food processor (for steak and mashed potatoes) and so on. Other recipes: the Tapas de Castillo Blanco (White Castle) and the Tacobellini (Burrito Supreme). But be warned, these are not 30-minute meals. The instructions, each step linked to a photo on Flickr, are as complicated as anything in Gourmet Magazine.

So who’s the twisted foodie behind this thing? It doesn’t list an author, but we tracked it down to a 34-year-old guy from Williamsburg named Erik R. Trinidad (below) a ridiculously talented travel writer and digital animator who should be working for Martha Stewart. Or Brokelyn. (Holla Erik! Have you ever tried Nathan’s foie gras?)

The obvious question: Does he eat the stuff? “The Tacobellini was pretty good,” he told us. “The thing is, the food sits under photographic lighting for so long that most of the items dry out by the time I get to eat them.”

Trinidad says he’s been styling food since childhood. “My brother and I used to play ‘Iron Chef Buffet’ at those Chinese food buffets, where we’d choose a category like chicken or soup and go out to the hot plates and try to outdo each other with the fanciest food styling of a dish,” he said.

He adds that he and his last girlfriend parted ways due to his “overuse of green garnish.” “We jokingly say we broke up because I wrongly put dried chives on her mac and cheese,” he said.

“As of late, whenever I make food for myself or friends, I’m all about the presentation of it,” he said, pointing us to a recent lunch of tuna salad on a tomato with a slice of dill from his Flickr pool. (And no, this one didn’t start out as a Filet-o-Fish.)
