Rooms at the NU Hotel are $116 on Jetsetter
Jetsetter, the luxe hotel discount site that makes us weep for Machu Picchu hideaways and beachfront huts in Bali, features its first Brooklyn property this week, and it’s the NU Hotel at Smith and Atlantic. For four more days, you can book NU Hotel rooms on Jetsetter for $116 (normally $179 and up elsewhere). We haven’t stayed there, cause we live here, but at these prices (and solid NU Hotel reviews on TripAdvisor), we’ll suggest it to our parents / cousins / friends. Those Jetsetters love this 93-room gem because, and we quote: Read the rest of this entry »

Beer garden declares start to summer, knows target audience
This picture is too perfect not to post: Announcing the seasonal opening of Gowanus Yacht Club, home to cheap pitchers, cheaper mysterious “Duff” beer, veggie dogs, good tunes, and the sun-soaked seating area that, for this reporter, most symbolizes a cool oasis adorning another gorgeous summer in Brooklyn. The small beer garden at the corner of Smith and President streets opened its gate on Friday, according to its Facebook page. Expect to see your friends at Brokelyn there en masse (or sometimes just with a good book). Thanks to @alibrady12 for doing her duty and sending us the pic! Ah summer!
Bar of the Day: Bar Great Harry
This is the latest in our series on the venues featured in the Brokelyn Beer Book. With its prodigious on-tap and bottled selection, Bar Great Harry in Carroll Gardens is about the beer, plain and simple.

Bar Great Harry fun fact: Every other Tuesday is Brewery Night, with $4 beers from the brewery of the day.
Sunday special: $27 Brooklyn Bridge tattoos
Hankering for a permanent reminder of your love affair with Brooklyn? Sunday’s your deeply-discounted chance, courtesy of the inking wizards at Brooklyn Tattoo. The Brooklyn Bridge turns 127 this month, and the Smith St. tattoo artists are honoring the edifice with $27 bridge tattoos. At least 15 designs will be available, and the one-day price is a steep drop-off from the usual $75-$130. The sale’s from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and it’s first-come, first-served. Car-service price check: Cobble Hill

Baby's night out on Smith St.? Could run you $10 extra getting home.
This week we turned our car-service lens on Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens. The area as a whole is pricey, with a trip to JFK invariably above $40 (why, we have no idea). And things get even more expensive when babies or pets are involved.
We gave the hypothetical starting point of Smith St. and Atlantic Ave. and asked for quotes to the following three destinations: 1) Flatbush Ave. and Eighth Ave. in Park Slope, 2) Delancey St. and Allen St. on the Lower East Side and 3) JFK Airport. Read the rest of this entry »
The Smith Street happy hour list
This week, we took it upon ourselves to make the rounds on Smith Street, trolling from Atlantic Avenue to Union Street to find all of the happy hour specials along the way. Although most of the 16 places listed below have similar hours and prices (weekdays 5-8, $3 beers), some standouts caught our eye: Camp’s Recession Thursdays run all night long with $3 well drinks, while Bar Great Harry offers 21 beers on tap as well as well drinks and bottles, all 2 for $5! Once the clock strikes 8 you can always saunter down the block to Gowanus Yacht Club, where $2 and $3 drinks are the norm. Read the rest of this entry »
