Ewww girl, you’re lookin’ shaaaaggg-gy. I know, I know. Haircuts cost like a million dollars unless you want to walk into a Supercuts and play hairdresser roulette. But here’s a chance for a cheap-ass haircut that does some good too. On Monday, Davines salons are offering donation-based haircuts ($15 minimum) at participating haircuteries. Your money goes to the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, which plants trees in impoverished communities. Pretty cool. Participating salons include Greenpoint’s The Parlour, Park Slope’s Slope Suds, Bay Ridge’s Cavale Tonusi, and many more (Appointments required). You can’t beat this deal. Not even at Supercuts. (I’ve tried.) If you can’t afford $15, maybe try this, or there’s always this. Find out more about where your money is going: Read the rest of this entry »
Salon offering free haircuts to job seekers
Times are tough and finding employment can feel like a full-time job itself. Once you’ve managed to actually land an interview, don’t let the hours spent submitting resumes, writing cover letters and desperately refreshing Craigslist go to waste when you walk in with a shaggy DIY-do. Donna’s Hair Salon, at 481 Nostrand Ave. in Bed-Stuy, wants to help you impress potential employers with a fresh (and FREE) haircut. The generous salon is offering free haircuts on Mondays and Tuesdays between 10am and 1pm. It’s not clear what kind of haircut is best for doughnut-making or astronaut jobs.

Cost-cutting with your natural hair

Pam Grier
As a Southern black woman in Brooklyn, I’ve noticed that far more black women around here wear their hair natural than where I’m from (most black women chemically straighten their hair). I’ve gone natural most of my life, so I know too well how expensive getting un-relaxed hair done can be: upward of $100 for a full wash, set and style, compared to $30 for a woman who uses relaxer. When I moved here, I assumed the popularity of going natural in Brooklyn would translate to more reasonable prices. I was wrong—it doesn’t. But I have found a few ways to cut costs with my hair-care… and even afford the occasional salon-pampering (hint: discount to come). Read the rest of this entry »
Hey cheapskates: beauty school students want your head
We personally can’t vouch for Cristina’s hairdressing talents, but she and her beauty-school sisters are looking for some guinea pigs hair models willing to submit to their newbie stylings for free to $15. She lives in BK, but the school is in lower Manhattan. Here’s the deal:
My school is holding some events and I (and my fellow stylists!) need models. We are taught by excellent instructors in a beautiful, extremely clean studio using professional product lines. We workshop with lead stylists from the top salons in the city. (You know, those ones where people pay $600 for a haircut?) Every step of every service is heavily supervised from start to finish. And it is really, really cheap. Here’s what we need: Read the rest of this entry »
Where to go for a great curly cut in Brooklyn?
Reader Dina is looking for a Park Slope or Prospect Heights alternative to Devachan—the curlcentric salon in SoHo. “I have tried so many places, but few deliver,” Dina writes, adding that so far she’s been happiest with Kim at Medusa. We’ve recommended Jeffrey at the Beehive (though a commenter disagreed) and heard good things about wave management at SlopeSuds, but would like to put this to our spiral-tressed sistren and brethren. Anyone?

Tuesdays are training days at the tattoorific Woodley & Bunny salon in Williamsburg, which means pro bono coifs at the hands of assistants who are apprenticing to become full-fledged stylists. We stopped by for a gratis blowout recently, which was unexpectedly excellent and a likely gateway to riskier hair experiments on some future Tuesday. Read the rest of this entry »
The cut-rate curl whisperer
If you have curly hair, there’s a decent chance you’ve wound up at Devachan, the Manhattan salon with a weirdly effective method of cutting and styling curly hair (cutting it dry then washing it, blotting with paper towels, lecturing the customer on the evils of shampoo). While the starter cut at the two Soho salons is $95, there’s a cheaper alternative in Williamsburg—Jeffrey at the Beehive Salon. Read the rest of this entry »
