How to beat crowds and win big at Century 21
How can you survive the Century 21 shopping experience? Simple! Go only on your cousin’s birthday, stand on one leg, close your eyes, and make sure your name is Edgar. Racked asked fashion writer Mark Ellwood for his expert discount shopping secrets and he came up with a 7-point attack strategy that would impress a Navy Seal. To start:
• Visit in February and August, the prime times for showroom overstock.
• Visit three times a week for two weeks in 15-minute targeted attacks.
• Arrive early (the store opens at 7:45 AM).
• Don’t go to the dressing room; buy mutiple sizes and try them on at home.
There’s more (three points to be exact) but we’re going to show some blogger etiquette and leave the rest to Racked. (Plus we’re behind on our Century 21 shopping by about six trips.) Got any Century 21 shopping tips and/or horror stories? Let us know in the comments.

Brooklyn Flea + One Hanson Place = wowzers!
Holy letterpress cocktail coasters! Racked, the essential NYC retail blog, has some choice photos from the Brooklyn Flea’s debut in One Hanson Place in Saturday, in all of its landmarked art-deco glory. Vendors in teller windows, pupusas in the vault—it’s all too too Brooklyn-fabulous. Izzy Greenspan of Racked (love her, btw) writes:
“The mix of vendors isn’t much different from other Flea locations—there’s the usual vintage coats, grandmotherly furniture, and pressed-tin mirrors, plus a sprinkling of young artisans with homemade bags and clothes. But all of it looks a hundred times fancier under the soaring ceiling.”
The photos from inside the 1895 building, former home to the Williamsburg Savings bank, certainly suggest as much. As Racked points out, it’s a “perfect marriage of market and location.” To us, it’s looking like the perfect place to lose your kids on a freezing Saturday. See more photos on Racked.

The folks over at Racked are a little more dedicated to bargain hunting today at the Barneys Warehouse sale, and by “dedicated” we mean “willing to wait in line at a godforsaken hour in the morning for shoes that still cost more than our entire paycheck.” But props to them for getting in front of the store at 6:59 (!) a.m., subversive live-blogging apparati in tow, so we can get the scoop on just how crazy people get at the idea of discounted Miu Miu bags. How to survive tomorrow’s Barneys Warehouse Sale
Warning: this post isn’t for everyone. But if you’re a designer-label obsessive and you still have disposable income (congrats!), get to bed early tonight. Tomorrow, starting at 8 a.m., is the first day of the biannual Barneys Warehouse Sale, which is the retail scrum of the year for bargain-loving fashionites, with clothing, shoes, accessories and housewares marked 50 to 75 percent off.
Bargains being a relative term, of course. Last year, on a magazine mission to find Christian Louboutins at the sale, I scouted a pair of red patent ankle-strap stilettos for $310 (originally $780), white patent wedges for $260 ($625), and camel slingbacks for $230 ($625). And so on. There were also loads of Miu Miu, Prada, Lanvin and YSL shoes, also for less than half the original prices. Read the rest of this entry »
Dress like your favorite Do the Right Thing Character
Love this! Our friends at Racked tipped us off to a fun story on hip-hop clothier Mark Ecko’s Complex.com, which marks the 20th anniversary of Spike Lee’s Bed-Stuy classic with a shopping guide to the movie’s characters: Mookie (Spike himself), Radio “Love/Hate” Rahim (Bill Nunn), Buggin’ Out (Giancaro Esposito), Mister Señor Love Daddy (Samuel L. Jackson) and Clifton (John Savage). Who gets our vote? Tough call: Mookie’s Dodgers shirt will always be a Brooklyn classic, and Clifton can ride that sporty cyclist look anywhere in BK, but Buggin’ (left) gets the edge for his smartly sculpted dreads and mad-scientist specs.
