Who’s your favorite BK auto mechanic?

We’re always looking for ways to help out, even when no one actually asks us for it. Posting recently on Park Slope Parents, Inha asks where to find an “honest, reliable mechanic” for her down-and-out car. A fellow PSPer, “omatokai” chimed in with this favorite in Prospect Heights:

Nok Auto repair on Saint Marks Ave between Underhill and Washington in Prospect Heights! The owner is Rohan, and he is a real stand-up guy… The shop is even nice and clean. You just get zero of that feeling that you’re being hosed. I used to loathe having to see a mechanic. Very pleased to have found Rohan / Nok.

We hope that’s working out for Inha, but there must be plenty more “honest, reliable” mechanics out there—for those of us with cars, that is. Where do you go for your brakes, shocks, tune-ups and tree-holes?

Park Slope’s infamous ‘Fabulous’ mom launches blog

Members of the Park Slope Parents community may remember a posting a few weeks ago by one Courtney W., a transplanted California mom who railed against the dowdy winter uniform of the typical Park Slope mom. Courtney herself prefers over-the-knee Prada boots, Alexander Wang cowl necks and J. Mendel furs to North Face sleeping-bag coats and Nepalese mittens.

For the most part, the PSP hive mind did not appreciate her fashion critique. Responses mainly accused her of insensitivity to the plight of Haitians and general superficiality (um, duh). One used her post to ignite a circumcision debate. (Who is that dude on the listserv who manages to turn every debate back to his missing foreskin??? He won’t be satisfied until everybody in Brooklyn has spent at least five minutes contemplating his penis.) We got in touch with Courtney and told her to launch a blog called Fabulous in Park Slope. For some reason, she listened! FAPS isn’t the usual Brokelyn fare—her kid’s named Cash and from the sounds of things he has plenty of company around the W. household—but here it is.

Perhaps you’ve already raced through Amy Sohn’s Prospect Park West in three sittings at the Barnes & Noble on Seventh Avenue. (And if you haven’t read it, what are you waiting for? If the answer is, “an extra $16.50” put a copy on hold at the library here.) Or maybe you saw the recent New York Times’ piece, which reported that part of her book is based on a couple of swingers who actually posted on the Park Slope Parents listserv a couple of years back looking for willing couples to romp with. Funny because, who would volunteer to sleep with the mother superiors and candy-ass dads who populate the PSP message boards? (We paid our $25 to join so leave us alone.) Isn’t there, like, a Swedish frisbee club you could hit up? Where do swingers find each other these days, now that Plato’s Retreat is a distant memory of a pre-AIDS era? Burning questions, all. In the mean time, here’s a reprint of the original swingers’ posts, courtesy of PSP, followed by a couple of choice comments.

Hi,
We are one of you, a really nice slope couple with kids who occasionally
indulges in some soft swinging. We thought we’d put it out there, if there
are other folks who might be curious about this. We are not part of what
they call the “lifestyle,” but have had a few really fun experiences that
have spiced up our lives. We are mid 30′s, and some of you may know us, so
we have made sure to keep ourselves anonymous, and we ask that you do as
well, to keep discretion. (we made a new email account). We don’t know if
anyone is interested, but we thought this would be an ideal place to meet
like-minded, bright, imperfectly attractive, professional, thoughtful and
friendly people. We’re not sure how to go about this exactly, so if anyone
has any input (please be nice) or interest, let’s communicate. We can be

I consider myself a forward thinking, liberal Park Sloper, but PLEASE!!!! If
this is a legitimate post, you are both out to lunch. Have you checked the
name of this listserve lately? PARKSLOPEPARENTS! Last I knew it was about
help and support and an exchange of information focused on PARENTING in PARK
SLOPE. Did it ever dawn on you that kids might read some of these postings? Find
another outlet folks!

I’m not a swinger, but last time I checked, parents were sexual beings too.
I appreciate A & AZ freshly reminding us that we all express ourselves in a
variety of different ways. Thanks!
