Back when we started this blog way back yonder in 2009, one of our first posts was on the wonders of Midwood’s Amazing Savings, where you can get all kinds of books, toys, dishes, small appliances, crafting gear, gift wrap galore for super cheap. We just went back to the Avenue M location after a decent spell away, and it’s actually gotten better. Now that it’s in a bigger space, there’s more of the stuff we want (kids’ books, brand-name toys, fashion-fun shopping totes, adorable crockpots for one) and less of the stuff we don’t want (unrecognizable kosher dry goods; under-the-sink necessities.) How good are the prices? We did a comparison shop. Read the rest of this entry »
The perfect Valentine’s gift for tree huggers
Screw it, we’ll just go all out for Valentine’s Day stuff today, even though us singles think it’s about as real a holiday as the Verdukian Holiday of Mouth Pleasures: You could spend tons on an overrated restaurant, followed by weak cocktails, followed by, I don’t know what you couples are into these days, flowers or something? Lame. Step up the game this year by putting all that money in one place and dedicating a whole tree in Prospect Park to your lurver, which will help replace all the ones destroyed by storms last year. For $75, you can plant a sapling as part of the restoration project; for $100, you can contribute to a communal Arbor Day Tree, which also gets you an invite to a special planting ceremony on April 27. Each one gets you a special Valentine’s Day certificate, but orders have to be in by noon on Feb. 9 to ensure you get it in time. Visit the park’s site for ordering details. Then maybe your partner will make like a tree and … oh never mind.

25 gifts under $25, No. 20: Dollar store things you can actually give
You’ve been reading lots of gift guides here, from gifts for foodies, gifts from Pinterest and gifts under $25. What about when you don’t have $25 to spend? Like, when you’re down to pocket change? Our friends at Brooklyn Based did some comprehensive scouring of 99 cents stores to find things you can actually give. The cool finds include painted carafes, cheap pots, margarita glasses, some “flesh colored, squishy boobies with hard pink nipples, as fun to hold and squeeze as the real things,” and much more. Put the right bow on it and no one will even know you shopped at a store with the price in the name.

25 gifts under $25, No. 18: Drinkable mustache
Brooklyn has a well-documented pro-mustache bias, with all our grooming competitions, events where mustaches are the party favor and, of course, our own one-and-only mustache ride. But this holiday, even the facial folliclely challenged can get in on the instant maturity status that comes with a mustache — even if you’re just using it to drink your chocolate milk. This set of six GammaGo Stache Straws clip on to your drinking device and are dishwasher safe and reusable, so you can add some panache with your stache over and over again. Then it can be Movember all year long!
25 gifts under $25, No. 16: Bacon. Chocolate. Pancakes.
One Christmas break, I tried to educate my southern brother-in-law on the trendy food fad of chocolate-covered bacon. Unfortunately, my attempt to recreate the amazing combination of salty meat and sweet chocolate was foiled by using hickory smoked bacon. But I am giving it another go this year: he is getting Vosges Mo’s Bacon Choco Chip Pancake Mix in his stocking. There is no better setting for mixing flavors than in an all-natural buttermilk pancake (the secret is Vosges Chocolates’ famous Mo
Bacon Bar chips). Breakfast experiences combining maple syrup and sausage have taught us that.
