Gyms, they try so hard to get you in the door, what with their discounts and freebies and entreaties to karma. But what about for the rest of us who just plain don’t like the gym, those who think that running and working out means making your way through the elements, not plodding on an infinity wheel in air conditioning while watching your membership dollars used to broadcast Nate Berkus‘s bland face? The city is a bastion of free fitness opportunities, and Well+Good’s new inaugural free Summer Wellness Guide lays it all out for you: 20-pages of yoga, outdoor fitness classes, bootcamps, canoeing, many of which don’t cost a thing! Plus: skin care tips and healthy restaurants with outdoor dining and there’s even a mashup-heavy running playlist to get you started! Read the rest of this entry »

Don't throw out those leg warmers just yet
I always wondered where it was still acceptable to tease your hair a foot high and rock some lace gloves —and the answer, of course, is in Williamsburg: Grab your scrunchies, leg warmers and cutoff denim vests, because the 80s are back(!) at The L Trainer, a fitness studio offering free 80s aerobics classes on Tuesdays. So besides an opportunity to dress up, what does it provide? Studio owner Camille Eroy-Reveles tells Gothamist: ”There is a tendency in the fitness industry to take things too seriously. But when you have a neon headband and leotard on you get back to what exercise is really about—having fun and feeling good.” This isn’t an Equinox, so don’t feel guilty about having some fun with your workout routine. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet the next Ferris Bueller while you do the Jane Fonda. Sweating to the Oldies — for free! The L Trainer, at 118 N. 11th Street, 8pm.

Punk Rope in action. Photo via TimeOutNY
Anyone in America can go to a gym, or jog a trail or lift some milk jugs in their garage. We here in Brooklyn tend to demand something a little more… creative in our fitness routines. Like kickball… and aerial trapeze. Here’s a new one for you to try that takes boutique fitness to brag-worthy heights. Take a classic school-recess activity, add loud punk music and frenetic games and what do you get? Punk Rope! It’s a radical combo of the borough’s ingenuity and its dedication to make everything more fun than you thought it could be. And we’ve got your chance to get a taste of the class for free, along with a free starter pack of punk rope paraphernalia—if you are the lucky winner at the RAFFLE OF THE CENTURY tomorrow night. By now you’ve probably heard of Zumba, the Latin-fusion, easier-and-sweatier-than-a-rhumba fitness style of dance that’s supposed to be this decade’s Tai Bo. It’s said to burn 600-1000 calories per class, which means you can a) lose weight, or b) eat this, and not gain weight, which I think might be a stronger argument. Zumba classes are popping up all over Brooklyn, and tonight (Wed. March 10) there are two ways to try it, one free and the other cheap. Read the rest of this entry »

We love Midwood Martial Arts & Family Fitness Center, the slightly misnamed karate-yoga-gymnastics-family-fitness-and-recreation hub on Avenue H. Sunny and clean studio, zero pretension, excellent instructors, friendly neighborhood vibe, etc. etc. etc..
We also love the owners: Alison and Alfred, who are so nice they belong in some small town somewhere (ignore the fact that small-town friendliness is often overrated). That’s why we’re thrilled that they’re colluding with us on a little deal exclusively for Brokelyn readers: Alfred and Alison have agreed to offer a very limited number of 10-class cards for the unreasonably low price of $85 (normally $140). That means each class is just $8.50. Read the rest of this entry »

The running track at the Armory Y.
Any time you hear of a new YMCA opening in Brooklyn is a good day—how many Bally’s offer financial aid?—and we’re feeling downright exuberant about the ribbon-cutting today at the new $16 million Y opening in the Park Slope Armory, at 15th Street and Eighth Avenue. So far all we’ve seen of this rehabbed 1895 fortress is the 1/8th-mile running track (click photo for a bigger version), but good lord is it a looker. The 20,000 square-foot space also boasts 50 pieces of cardio equipment, four multipurpose courts for basketball, soccer and volleyball. The class schedule isn’t out yet, but it will offer spinning, pilates and aerobics along with various family classes. Today’s the opening ceremony, and the complex opens for real on Jan. 30. Starting tomorrow (Jan. 12) they’re selling charter memberships—$40/month for individuals and $72/month for families. There’s some kind of dual-membership deal where you can join this place and the Prospect Park Y on 9th Street, but they don’t give the rates on the web site. For those who don’t live nearby, the Y is offering free day passes through the end of the month to its six other locations in Brooklyn—click the box on this page. YMCA, Park Slope Armory, 361 15th St., (212) 912-2580 tsylvester@ymcanyc.org.

You’ve resolved to get in better shape in mind and body. You’ve also resolved to spend less money. You have not resolved to start running outside when it’s 10 degrees. (Maybe next year.) For yoga aficionados, January is the season of deals—and have we got one for you! Actually, you’ll have to wait until next week to find out about Brokelyn’s exclusive offer of unreasonably inexpensive yoga, dance and family fitness classes at a studio we LOVE. In the mean time, here’s a sampler of what’s in various other neighborhoods around town, and a tip: take the money you save and buy a mat now. Rental is always about $1, which quickly adds up to the price of just buying your own, and you’ll never have to wonder what else is sharing the mat with you. Read the rest of this entry »
Hard to argue with a deal for this group of New Yorkers, via AnimalNY. Membership is typically $70, so that’s a hell of a lot of savings for a hell of a lot of people who we all need to be in good shape.
The deal is good 8/11 through 9/11.
