But those deals don’t have exclusive providence on saving you money: there’s still Twitter! Yes, the land of various fictional Hulks and annoying rich celebrities is packed with accounts whose sole purpose is saving you money, getting you into free events (like advance movie screenings or The Colbert Report) and getting you free beer every day of the week. Follow these accounts to make sure you don’t miss a single open bar, sample sale or last-minute airfare deal. Read the rest of this entry »

New deal site kicks off with Williamsburg freebie-palooza

Tenka GraphicDeal sites. We love ‘em. Except when we buy the coupons and forget to redeem them (like half of the coupon-buying population, we’re told.)

So when the folks at a groovy new deal site called Tenka told us about their wallet-friendly twist on the usual pay-up-front model, we thought you might like to know more. On Tenka, you don’t have to pay on the front or the back end—most of their deals are totally, completely free.

Tenka, an NYC-based site founded by two ex-Googlers, Nhon Ma & Tim Zhou, specializes in mom-and-pop places that are overlooked by the bigger players in the deal space. It launches in Brooklyn today with a veritable freebie-palooza in Williamsburg: Read the rest of this entry »

10 deals we love in Bed-Stuy

Ms. Dahlia's pastries & cakes

It’s the original stomping ground of Jay-Z, Chris Rock, Lil’ Kim and that old ear-biter, Mike Tyson. It’s the showcase for epic wall art, gorgeous brownstones and some old-school, no-frills block parties. It’s Bed-Stuy. And in recent years, this chunk of Brooklyn has birthed a crop of seriously clutch (and cheap) spots to dine, drink and shop… on top of all the incredible, long-standing neighborhood staples. We know the secret’s been out for a while, but here are 10 deals we love in Bed-Stuy. Read the rest of this entry »

Going fast: $4 AMC movie tix

Get Him to the Greek

Get Him to the Greek

Here’s another NYC goodie  from group-coupon site KGB deals. Through Tuesday, Jun. 8, you can buy a $4 ticket  for any AMC movie theater. Little fine print for this one—except for the limit-one-per-customer, possible 3D/IMAX surcharge and black-out in Canada. Still, it’s a nice deal if you need a big-budget breather from the indie mania about to descend on the borough. AMC’s got a pretty good showing around NYC, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding one. Buy the discounted tix here, and do it soon—over 90 percent of them are long-gone.

Foursquare isn’t just for playgrounds anymore. The location-based social networking tool has exploded since its 2009 SXSW debut, and the site is starting to reward its members with more than just points and badges (not that we don’t love the I <3 BK badge, for those who’ve graced 25 different Brooklyn venues). Lately, bars and restaurants from Bay Ridge to Bushwick are offering free drinks, desserts and a few other benefits to their best Foursquare customers. Read the rest of this entry »

The poser’s guide to budget yoga in Brooklyn

A reader wrote in to ask where to find affordable yoga in town. A reasonable question: the going rate in Brooklyn is $16-$20 per class and $135-$175 for a 10-class card—expensive. I’ve grappled with this problem as well, and solved it in various ways: through trial-class discounts, Brooklyn yoga meetups and a few good DVDs.

I especially love Bikram yoga, and a lot of studios—say, Bikram Yoga South Slope—offer a “30-day challenge.” You pay for a month unlimited ($175), you go 30 days straight, then you get the next 30 days free. It can be tough, yes. But the financial incentive is huge. Read the rest of this entry »

Flash sales can be hazardous to your wallet

That's a whole lotta ring for $28 on Gilt Groupe. Or is it?

In cased you missed it, the Times style section had a good piece comparing flash deal sites like Ideeli and Gilt to other retail discount sites — and guess what! — the flash sales aren’t always such a bargain. Reporter Stephanie Rosenbloom compared prices on a Kate Spade tote bag, a navy dress by Decode 1.8 and Bjorn leather flats and found that the items were actually cheaper elsewhere:

On Gilt.com, where shoppers vie for limited-time discounts on designer brands, a Kate Spade cabana-stripe medium tote bag was recently $169, plus $5.95 shipping. That same day, the bag was on KateSpade.com for $130 with free shipping — about $45 cheaper. Read the rest of this entry »
