2 Broke Girls episode 7 recap: The racial stuff is getting weird

Cupcake lessons at an Italian bakery. Photos via CBS.

There was a scene in last night’s ’2 Broke Girls’ where Max stays up super late trying to craft the perfect icing flower atop a cupcake. It reminded me of a similar scene in Bridesmaids. Then I wished I was watching Bridesmaids, because that’s a fun movie, and then I could write all about Bridesmaids right now and we could all have a laugh and a moment of female empowerment. But we’re here to talk about CBS’ latest effort to portray broke life in Williamsburg.

This week, Max and Caroline attend a cupcake decorating class after a coffee shop owner declines to sell the girls’ treats because “they’re not pretty enough.” After a dreadful class and many labored attempts to make frosting flowers, Max finds her new niche: insult cupcakes (that say things like “Bite Me,” but I don’t even think it was meant to be an eating pun?). There was something in all of this about how society is too concerned with other people’s ideas of what’s pretty, but it kind of got lost in the fray of racism. Read the rest of this entry »

2 Broke Girls episode 6 recap: Baby massage leads to happy ending

Whatever you say about 2 Broke Girls’ wackadoo portrayal of Brooklyn (and I say a lot about it), the show always accurately depicts that Kat Dennings is awesome. She was particularly funny in this week’s episode, in which Max has a delightfully specific awkward encounter with her bartender/street artist crush: When Johnny pretends to be interviewing Max with a celery stalk, she seductively bites it while looking him right in the eyes, and everyone gets all weird. Awkwardness, hijinks and believable girl-bonding follow.

And of course, lots of deets about Brooklyn: Read the rest of this entry »

2 Broke Girls episode 2 recap: Everyone fall on your sword

Girls in bed together is hilllaaarious

As a broke lady waitressing while pursuing other passions, you would think that 2 Broke Girls is right up my alley. I sat my broke serving ass down, to watch the second installment of this CBS charmer so you don’t have to. The plot revolves around Max (Kat Dennings) trying to finally call it off with her Axe-smelling bf, while new roommate Caroline (Beth Behrs) can’t stop meddling in her life. Please take a Brooklyn comparison journey with us for the second episode of 2 Broke Girls: The Breakup. Read the rest of this entry »

New deal site kicks off with Williamsburg freebie-palooza

Tenka GraphicDeal sites. We love ‘em. Except when we buy the coupons and forget to redeem them (like half of the coupon-buying population, we’re told.)

So when the folks at a groovy new deal site called Tenka told us about their wallet-friendly twist on the usual pay-up-front model, we thought you might like to know more. On Tenka, you don’t have to pay on the front or the back end—most of their deals are totally, completely free.

Tenka, an NYC-based site founded by two ex-Googlers, Nhon Ma & Tim Zhou, specializes in mom-and-pop places that are overlooked by the bigger players in the deal space. It launches in Brooklyn today with a veritable freebie-palooza in Williamsburg: Read the rest of this entry »

The day that you love or hate is coming up. If you wake up Sunday morning with no one in your bed, stay there all day and eat garlic knots. It is a Sunday. If, however, you’re celebrating a new crush or a long-time love, here are some budget-friendly ideas from some of our favorite Brooklyn foodists. Bon appetit!, Brokelyn Luv Style.

1) Go for a sugar high. “I love the homemade Pop Tarts from Ted & Honey in Cobble Hill (264 Clinton St., 718-852-2212). They have absolutely zero in common with that beloved and most favored breakfast of my youth—they’re buttery rectangular tarts fashioned from paté sucre and they come filled up until swollen with fresh strawberry preserves, or peanut butter and homemade jelly, or the most decadent, chocolate and banana ($3.50 each). No toasting needed. Read the rest of this entry »

2 Broke Girls episode 13 recap: Max’s deep, dark secret

Did you know about coupons?

Last night’s 2 Broke Girls was probably the most annoying one yet, if you can believe it. Not only was it as ridiculous and racist as usual, but it also managed to eradicate the master plot that the show has been establishing since the pilot. At least there was an appearance by Chestnut, who has come to be the most down-to-earth character on this show, even though he is a horse living in a  backyard in Brooklyn. FREE KAT DENNINGS!
