Compete for cash money at the skint’s talent show!

Practice your moves; the talent show is soon!

Our budget blogging buddies at the skint are hosting a big ass talent show next month, and they are giving $150 in cash to the winner! On Sept. 8 at the Bell House, the skint presents So-You-Think-You’ve-Got-Talent Idol with the Stars to show off some of the most magnificent talent this side of Manhattan. Says the skint: ”Have people other than your mom praised your singing voice? Are you a bendy contortionist with a knack for celebrity impressions? Can you juggle bagpipes and train puppies to dance while riding a unicycle that has been set on fire? (Don’t worry, no one can do that last one!)” Read the rest of this entry »

Contest to turn your room from drab to fab

A touch of Flavorpaper goes a long way. Photo via Brooklyn Based

Maybe you’re staring at your wall watching the water stains your landlord refuses to fix and wondering if you can Dumpster dive enough cans of similar looking paint to cover it all up. Fancier fixes for your home decor problem — like, actually covering the wall with an attractive, matching pattern — probably fall down the priority list below making sure your rent gets paid. Here’s your chance to win a free installation of the same wallpaper that adorns Lenny Kravitz’s home and Steve Madden stores: Our friends at Brooklyn Based are teaming with The Sweeten to giveaway about $1,000 worth of paper and installation from boutique Brooklyn shop Flavor Paper. Contest ends Aug. 2, so find out how to enter here and you could have a whole new room before you know it.

Getcha damn hands up: Does BK need an anthem?

Time for a new Brooklyn anthem?

Once upon a time Brooklyn was paradise: a summer home for America’s savviest import/exporters and cut-throatiest robber barons. We were even independent once (miss you, 1898). It was a long 20th century here, but we’ve almost recovered our past glory: the G train more closely resembles those other trains while politicians, corporations, and residents now battle it out, East-Village style, for control of our streets. There’s one area where we still fall short: despite being the band-heaviest district in the country, we lack a true anthem. Manhattan songs simply won’t shut up about how awesome its people and hotels and sounds and aura and Christmases are, but we have those things too! Local blogs Nabewise and Stuff Hipsters Hate are hoping to bring the magic back with a contest to discover Brooklyn’s new anthem. Read the rest of this entry »

Giving the scoop on dog poop could win you $50

cheer up, pup. You're internet famous!

Endless car alarms,  screeching sirens, sidewalks covered in dog waste and the terrifying pack of just-released-from-school teenagers on the subway: these are among the more unpleasant aspects of living in New York City. But what is one to do? Blog about it, naturally. Brooklynite Jenny McCoy has taken up the cause of documenting dogs excusing themselves on sidewalks, and the owners who watch it happen, on her Tumblr, Dogs Shitting on Sidewalks. And now McCoy — whose unrelated day job is tweeting for @MTVnews — wants your help to document the doodie: any photo submitted to the site before April 30 will be entered to win $50 in cash. Send submission to jennylmccoy@gmail.com with cross streets and borough, but watch where you step.

Sixpoint design contest for fame & free beer

Six, the beer-swilling donkey, by Erik Zimmermann

Six, the beer-swilling donkey, design by Erik Zimmermann

Pop in that Bob Ross tape, crack open a cold one and get inspired. Sixpoint Craft Ales is calling graphic designers, illustrators and any schmo with open-source Photoshop to design the company a great new poster for its Red Hook brewery (apparently, animal puns are encouraged). The top three designs, chosen by popular vote, will be rewarded with a care package of rare homebrews, t-shirts and some tasty edible from the brewery’s resident master chef. And, of course, your design could soon grace the brewery walls. Read the rest of this entry »

Help make the Cyclone’s macho mascot

NY's Brewster McCall, a Mr. Cyclone semi-finalist

NY's Brewster McCall, a Mr. Cyclone semi-finalist

There must be something about the Cyclone that screams out “let’s have a contest.” Is it just the historic ride’s hard-working PR department? Or something about Coney Island’s old-timey, freak-show-wholesome appeal that naturally lends itself to public display? Whichever, we’re smack in the midst of another rollercoaster-runoff: this year’s Mr. Cyclone Contest. There are 21 semi-finalists left (14 Brooklynites), all hoping to become the ride’s next macho mascot. Vote for your favorites online to narrow the field to seven for this Saturday’s live finals. Win VIP tix to Sonic Youth at Celebrate Brooklyn

sonicyouthYes, the concerts at Celebrate Brooklyn are free. But go for one of the summer’s biggies, and free probably gets you an afternoon of line-waiting sunburn for nothing but a lumpy, bumpy seat on the distant grass. That doesn’t have to be you. LimeWire Store, the sponsor behind Sonic Youth’s Jul. 31 CB show, is giving away two VIP tickets for right up in front of the stage—so close, LimeWire says, that you’ll “see the settings on Thurston Moore’s amp stack.” If that doesn’t say “very important person,” we don’t know what does. To enter the giveaway, email LimeWire Store at contests@limewire.com by midnight, Jul. 29. Include the name of your favorite Sonic Youth album and why you like it. All the contest rules are here.
