The demise of the Jelly parties ended the idyllic summer tradition of raucous, free concerts on the Williamsburg waterfront. But now instead of that unsustainable utopia of outdoor music, slip n’ slides and dodgeball, you have a chance to actually work for your music, like the responsible adult you hope to be. Get free admission to this year’s ticketed waterfront shows by volunteering to pick up litter on the streets after the concerts. It’s a partnership of the Open Space Alliance and BurnedGreen, a new site for one-off volunteering opportunities in north Brooklyn. Here’s how to litter-patrol your way into hearing free Sonic Youth, TV On the Radio, Fleet Foxes and more this summer: Read the rest of this entry »
The badgeless guide to Northside

It’s my favorite time of year again: Not only is summer bursting from every cracked hydrant and aromatic taco truck, but the L Magazine’s Northside Festival is here, which means I can stop hauling ass to Prospect Park and effortlessly lure all of my friends to Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick for a glorious four days of burgeoning culture. Badges for the fest would have run you $60-$200 (and are sold out anyway), and tickets to the bigger shows have their own big price tags. But there’s plenty to do that’s doesn’t involve opening your wallet. Check out Brokelyn’s guide to free Northside, plus some bonus tips to the festival’s associated deals and freebies to help you soak up loads of film, music, art and north Brooklyn pride, without breaking the bank. A free & cheap Governors Island summer

We are SO there this summer! Photo courtesy of Trust for Governor's Island.
It served as an army base for 200 years following the Revolutionary War — now the only battles are over picnic tables. Over the past few summers, Governors Island has gone from an unused historical curiosity to a reinvented summer day-trip destination with a full calendar of artsy fare, concerts and other frolicsome events, most of them free. That makes it pretty much the best thing to happen to summer around here since the Brooklyn Bridge Park got a spiffy makeover. Read the rest of this entry »
Music for Misers, Oct. 25-28: Lobisomem, Strange Boys, more
So, CMJ’s gone, but that just means back to ever-free-and-cheap business as usual. This week, get horny with Superhuman Happiness at Coco 66. In the mood instead for speedy strumming on the upright bass and falsetto singing? Nat Baldwin will satisfy. Otherwise, Dirty Excuse’s gritty female vocals will likely make your nose bleed, and Lobisomem will penetrate the insides of your soul with his eclectic electronica. Read the rest of this entry »

Music for Misers, Sept. 7-9: Happy Birthday, Heavy Birds, more

Video Daughters,Wednesday at The Glasslands
Although it’s a short Labor-Day week, there’s no lack of boogey-inducing music to get you through to the next days off. Happy Birthday is rolling through with a free show tonight at Brooklyn Bowl. Think Beach Boys meet the Dirty Projectors. Then The Glasslands has got a pretty mean Wednesday night line-up with, among others, the ever-jovial Video Daughters (no one sings the Tri-State Area blues like they do). You know the deal, nothing’s more than $5. Read the rest of this entry »
