The broke and sporadically employed are all too aware of the age old employer Catch-22 slogan: “Only the experienced need apply.” Pray tell, how is a neophyte supposed to gain experience without first getting a job? Even at basic entry level work at a restaurant or coffee shop, you’re probably going to have to produce a resume to get in the door. Crop to Cup, the Gowanus coffee shop/importer/wholesaler, is doing its part to educate a new, erm, crop of budding baristas and coffee enthusiasts. Tomorrow, the shop will offer one of its regular training classes at their in-house education space. Read the rest of this entry »
3rd Ward: cheaper and better than ever
When it comes to creative pursuits, there are dreamers and doers. Dreamers talk, fantasize, scheme and concoct, but seldom act on their visions, brilliant though they may be.
Then there are doers – the people who take their artistic and entrepreneurial ideas and make them happen.
If you’ve ever been to 3rd Ward, you know it’s where dreamers can become doers.
3rd Ward is a hub of classes and workshop facilities where you move those jewelry designs out of your head and into silver, pewter or clay. Considering squatting? Take a class first
When you’re the most down and out, you’ve got a few options to pay the rent: aside from ditching the single life, or declaring the 20-something equivalent of bankruptcy and moving in with the parents, you could take a route that’s been returning to prominence recently: squatting in those myriad half-finished condos lining Williamsburg and elsewhere. There’s a class for that: a “Squat the Condos” class April 10, described as “a practical workshop on squatting and direct action that will take us all from curious dilettante to eager amateur.” But do you really need a class in this? Teacher Christopher Robbins fills us in. Read the rest of this entry »

Master them and future employers will be impressed by your slick-looking resume and imagine what wonders you can work for them. Read the rest of this entry »
Brooklyn Etsy queen opening DIY jewelry school
Success can come in many ways these days: a promotion, a new job, finally paying off your roommate for dropping her blowdryer in the toilet last summer, finding $20 in your jeans on laundry day; or, by our standards, getting four retweets in the space of twenty minutes (it’s the little things that count). For crafty entrepreneur Tracie Howarth, success has translated her successful Etsy jewelry making business into a real brick-and-mortar storefront in Billyburg. Read the rest of this entry »
Brokelyn’s guide to adult education
Have you been thinking this is the year you are going to learn something new? Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn Esperanto or pluck a harp, but how about making your own LED lamp or nature journaling? NYU and The New School aren’t the only places with interesting-sounding classes this winter. There are plenty of schools and “learning collectives” here in Brooklyn where you can pick up all kinds of useful and not-quite-so-useful abilities. They vary in price—with a few distinctly out of our range—but most are likely better values than, say, $430 for a series of museum walking tours with NYU: Read the rest of this entry »
