Here at the intersection of frugality and technology, we’re always on the lookout for the best of both worlds to help you save your hard-earned coin. That’s why the idea of a happy-hour sleuthing iPhone app most appeals to us: it’s the perfect tool for the brokester on the go who’ll never let a little thing like geographic naiveté stop them from seeking cheap booze. L Magazine rolled out the first app late last year, and now there are two, thanks to the Village Voice. Both deserve a toast, but which to get: L Magazine’s “Cocktail Compass” or Village Voice Media’s “Happy Hours” app? Here’s the rundown of each and our verdict. Read the rest of this entry »

A new BK Meatup to cure the holiday blues
Holidays. Nog with two straws. People skating hand-in-hand. Sickeningly cute couples huddled for warmth behind a frosted coffee shop window. It’s all enough happy winter romantic goo to make you want to vomit. And you know damn well you want to be a part of it. Unfortunately, December is a notoriously crappy time to meet new people to date, what with everyone’s attentions all on parties and family and such. But this year, don’t worry, because the BK Meatup is back, and it’s meatier than before. Read the rest of this entry »
And the blue ribbon goes to… the search for the best cheap beer
One of the benefits of brokedom in BK is that we have intimate knowledge of the taste and texture of Pabst Blue Ribbon, that ubiquitous lager of dubious award-winning credentials. It is the default option at many a bar due to its bottomed-out price, and its inescapable association with those lovable, huggable hipsters (because who doesn’t want to be lumped in with this guy?).
But we know you want more out of the world than just one can. And so it’s time to break free from those blue ribbons and embrace a post PBR-era. And there are plenty of other low-cost options.
This we determined by slogging through them, one by one. With low budgets and thirsty gullets, we set out to answer the question: when it comes to the bottom-of-the-cost-ladder beers out there, which ones are the best? Read the rest of this entry »
TONIGHT: it’s the great BK Meatup!
Calling all single Brokelynites—we want to hook you up! We proudly present the BK Meatup (meat market + meetup) that we’re co-sponsoring on Wednesday Sept. 30 along with our fave digisphere partners: FuckedinParkSlope (FiPS) and Brooklyn Based.
So why a singles party? It all started when commenters wrote to FIPS about how hard it was to hook up with other single people in Strolleropolis and thus a meatup was born. Read FIPS for the whole story but here’s the quick version of what you can expect on Wednesday, September 30 at The Bell House, from 7 to 11. Read the rest of this entry »
A day in Greenpoint for $25

Papacito's, home of the $1.50 taco.
ASME is the American Society for Magazine Editors. Add another ‘S’ to that, and you’ve got ASSME: the American Society for Shit-Canned Media Elites—a support group and material pool for pink-slipped members of the worlds of word and pictures.
On the ASSME blog today, Brooke Moreland (she’s Broke to us!) writes a fun piece about a whole day’s worth of cheap-o activities you can do in Greenpoint, starting with handball ($1 if you don’t have any of the equipment already), moving on to $7 yoga, $1.50 tacos at Papacito’s, and ending with a 7-and-a-half hour drinking marathon, planned for those with plenty of experience imbibing in the middle of the afternoon and consisting of over half the day’s $25 budget. You’ll have to read the piece to find out where to get $2 pitchers and so much more. Bravo, Ms. Moreland: a day well spent, and with plenty of unemployment-check change left over.

Rachael Ray road test: Can you really add salt to cheap beer?
Is there any way to spruce up cheap hooch so that your guests are fooled into thinking they’re drinking top-shelf? Every Day with Rachael Ray suggests adding a dash of salt to improve the flavor of cheap brew and serving it in glasses. (Maybe you should start by pouring a case into pretty glass pitchers before the guests arrive so nobody spots the empties?) Read the rest of this entry »
