Ms. Dahlia's pastries & cakes
It’s the original stomping ground of Jay-Z, Chris Rock, Lil’ Kim and that old ear-biter, Mike Tyson. It’s the showcase for epic wall art, gorgeous brownstones and some old-school, no-frills block parties. It’s Bed-Stuy. And in recent years, this chunk of Brooklyn has birthed a crop of seriously clutch (and cheap) spots to dine, drink and shop… on top of all the incredible, long-standing neighborhood staples. We know the secret’s been out for a while, but here are 10 deals we love in Bed-Stuy. Read the rest of this entry »

We can all picture it: the Fourth of July get-together, kids playing in a grassy backyard, meat on the barbie, beers* in hand… You may not think Brooklyn’s built for this Independence Day ideal, but it is. There are a bunch of reasons to appreciate Fette Sau, the Williamsburg barbecue spot housed in a former auto shop on Metropolitan Ave. There’s the casual, loft-like vibe of the place, with its communal picnic tables, scruffy staffers and industrial-rustic décor. Mermaid Parade photo by QXZ.
In addition to a 40-mile walk to New Jersey and a father’s day event at Babeland, where dads get a free goody bag by bringing their “little bundles of joy” (13 is definitely too old), here’s what’s on tap:
Mermaid Parade: If you’re feeling tearful about the demise of Coney Island, party like the old days at the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. For the uninitiated: think of it as Mardi Gras meets Atlantis, or as gay pride for straight women, or as the Brooklyn event that brings out the most amateur photographers pre square foot. There’s another clothing swap in Brooklyn this weekend, and you know the drill: Bring out your dead … outfits and swap them for new duds. But this time there’s a bonus twist, especially if you have more clothes than money for food right now: You can turn your old duds into delicious summer BBQ this Sunday at the Bushwick Food Coop Clothing Swap BBQ and fundraiser. One bag of clothes gets you free local, organic food at the BBQ, plus entry to the swap, which also includes music, dancing and cooking demonstrations. Even if you don’t have clothes to swap, you can get in for a $5 donation, which benefits the coop. Read the rest of this entry »
