I’m still trying wrap my head around this article in the Daily News pronouncing the best food in Brooklyn. The piece nods impressively to some establishments I’ve never heard of (like Buckley’s in Marine Park), and covers the far reaches of the borough, with neighborhoods including Ocean Hill (best West Indian food) and Homecrest (cheap health food). But if the lineup sounds pretty random so far, you’re not wrong. Read the rest of this entry »
New deal site kicks off with Williamsburg freebie-palooza
Deal sites. We love ‘em. Except when we buy the coupons and forget to redeem them (like half of the coupon-buying population, we’re told.)
So when the folks at a groovy new deal site called Tenka told us about their wallet-friendly twist on the usual pay-up-front model, we thought you might like to know more. On Tenka, you don’t have to pay on the front or the back end—most of their deals are totally, completely free.
Tenka, an NYC-based site founded by two ex-Googlers, Nhon Ma & Tim Zhou, specializes in mom-and-pop places that are overlooked by the bigger players in the deal space. It launches in Brooklyn today with a veritable freebie-palooza in Williamsburg: Read the rest of this entry »

Mon dieu! Le Brokavore deigns to try $2.50 Canadian bagels

A $2.50 Montreal bagel from Mile End.
If hell was a bit nippy this past weekend, or airborne pigs were spotted over Prospect Park, I can offer an explanation. Which is this: Shortly after noon on Saturday, I, The Brokavore, a man devoted to thrift the way carp are devoted to swimming, walked into the Mile End on Hoyt Street in Boerum Hill, asked for a poppyseed bagel, and pried $2.50 from my cold, not-quite-dead hands. A Canadian bagel for $2.50? Le Brokavore says ‘Mais non!’

Au revoir, non cheri.
OK, let me get this straight. Certain Brooklyn foodies’ heart rates are climbing because tomorrow morning they’ll be able to wake up in the borough chosen by Yahweh as the spiritual home of the bagel, hot-foot it to Boerum Hill and buy one freshly imported across international lines, from a country where Tim Horton is a culinary icon? And for this they’re going to lay down a schmear-melting $2.50US a pop? Read the rest of this entry »
You read it here first: Park Slope bagels are NYC’s best
Today, the venerable Serious Eats noshing blog announces that they have found New York’s best bagel. And guess what! Their three-borough bagel survey crowns Bagel Hole in Park Slope as the champ. Our own Brokavore couldn’t agree more, which is why he came to that very same conclusion more than a week ago, sans the help of Serious Eats’ density calipers, flour-particle counts, fleet of ZipCars, and so on. (Not that we’re opposed to overly scientific taste tests around here). Tell it, Brokey…
Who doesn’t like free bar food? NYT readers
The Times’ Frugal Traveler Matt Gross (he of the best job in media) does a fun rundown this week of all the free food you can get with alcohol in NYC, including the fried chickpeas at Alchemy (left, Fifth and Bergen) and the Sunday morning bagels and bloodies special at The Brazen Head (Court and Atlantic), a Brokelyn intern fave.
Just as entertaining are the crabby comments following the post: “If you’re that broke that eating for free at these places is your only option, then alcohol isn’t something you should spend your money on,” Hannah scolds.
