Great to know about the store on ave x, Mike. Prospect Perk on Flatbush/Sterling also sells BH's finest, and that is where I had my first perfect egg bagel since i was a mini-Brooklynite. Another good place is on 14th ave btw 43rd+44th sts in Borough Park (not far from the F @ Ditmas). Used to be called Bagel Spot, but they've renovated and I can't guarantee that the name or quality remains.

The owner worked at a Bagel Store in Gravesend when he was younger. That Bagel Store, Bake City Bagels, is still around (openned in 1977). It's located on Ave X between East 1st and West Streets. If you like the Bagel Hole try the place where he learned his stuff!!!

[...] Today, the venerable Serious Eats noshing blog announces that they have found New York’s best bagel. And guess what! Their three-borough bagel survey crowns Bagel Hole in Park Slope as the champ. Our own Brokavore couldn’t agree more, which is why he came to that very same conclusion more than a week ago, sans the help of Serious Eats’ density calipers, flour-particle counts, fleet of ZipCars, and so on. (Not that we’re opposed to overly scientific taste tests around here). Tell it, Brokey… [...]

I go to Bagel Hole all the time, and it's wildly inconsistent. On the same day, some bagels are perfect and beautiful, others are like a rock, cooked to all hell.

Sounds like the real deal, you describe a real NYC bagel, not monsta grande circles aka bagels. A kindred spirit more down south brookyn is Bagel Bazaar at 2208 86th St. It's on the corner of Bay Parkway and 86th Street (right downstairs from the D Train, Bay Parkway subway. OMG, their new multi-grain bagael is fabulous and their Flagels (flat bagels) are heaven for those who like the crusiter kind.
